A Serbian Wedding
What is a ‘Traditional’ Serbian Wedding?
A summary of a Serbian Wedding…
“Experience the vibrant tapestry of a traditional Serbian wedding, where centuries of culture and celebration come together in a whirlwind of colour and joy! Picture this: the warm glow of candles illuminating a grand hall, the air filled with the delicious scent of sarma and roasted meats, and the uplifting sound of tamburitza music setting the scene. Guests clad in beautiful ethnic attire, each stitch telling a story, gather to witness the couple’s vows surrounded by the blessings of family and friends. Be captivated by the rich customs, from the symbolic bread and salt offered to the bride and groom to the lively kolo dance that weaves everyone together in a harmonious circle. With laughter echoing through the night and heartfelt toasts raising spirits, a Serbian wedding is not just a celebration of love; it’s an enchanting affair that brings together generations, creating unforgettable memories that will last a lifetime.”

Hell yes! Got invited to a genuine Serbian wedding on the weekend! What a blast!
Interestingly the beautiful old church was quite small from the outside and reminiscent of some old rendered concrete Aussie churches (which are almost always brick in Australia), but this building was very old and the external appearance belied the absolutely stunning interior!
The Ceremony was casual but quite traditional. and I found it really interesting. The church interior certainly added to the regal atmosphere of the wedding and I found it held me spellbound, even though I had no idea of what was being spoken. The amount of work, and the incredible intricate finishes in Serbian religious buildings, is worth the time it takes to view inside these important monuments to the Serbian culture. Doesn’t matter if you are religious or not, take the time to have a look!
And the celebrations? Bloody hell! Like a non stop Eurovision contest in a small venue, with heaps of character like an old Bavarian restaurant. Couple this with amazing food, full on music, non stop noise, heaps of strong local beverages, dancing in the aisles or everywhere there was space, full on noise and total craziness… and this was awesome!
Everyone drinks, eats, smokes, sings, dances and laughs. Absolutely had no idea what was going on but hands down best, craziest and most fun wedding I've ever been to. Food, drink and music to excess. Every female looked like a model, the singer looked like an ex Miss Serbia, and if you dared to get up from your seat, you were immediately dancing and singing!!
Truly an experience. If you ever get the chance to attend a Serbian wedding, DO IT!
