Final Thought?

Firstly, it’s worth visiting Vienna simply to experience the important global history of the magnificent buildings, the famous inhabitants, the aura of an ancient (to an Australian anyway) culture and city, and to see first hand many things we have only read and learned about from a great distance on the other side of the world.

Yes, the buildings and history is first class. The actual scale of the intricate and quite frankly awesome structures, and the amazing condition they remain in, are worth the trip alone. Throw in the many stories of famous people who resided and studied here, and the beautiful aesthetics of a larger than expected city, are incredible.

Unfortunately for this traveller, the city of Vienna was a letdown in a few areas. It is NOT very tourist-friendly for the large amount of English speaking/reading tourists who visit here. From the airport, to the public transport, to the street signs, tourist attractions and hospitality establishments - there is virtually NO English signs, language or simple directions anywhere. Obviously this makes it far more difficult to navigate the places and people for most English speaking visitors. Yes, people do speak a small amount of English, and you can get by, it’s not great to be honest and this surprised me greatly.

And secondly, the people, I found in general, to be quite rude. This was also a shock to me as we Australians are pretty easy going and accommodating so it took some getting used to. Not a lot of courtesy on display, and at times, you even felt you were being a himndrance when ordering or buying products or services. My experience only, but as I was accompanied by someone who speaks fluent German, which obviously made navigating the city and it’s services much easier, we both found this to be quite disappointing.

This may not be the case for everyone, but I personally found it to be a definite lowlight of the Vienna experience. Happy to hear from anyone else on how they found their trip to this beautiful city.
